Interracial Relationships

Is There Still a Stigma of Interracial Relationships?

womanSingle, successful black women face some of the same issues that successful women of other races face. They tend to want men who can match them economically and have goal-oriented views. Successful black women dream of being part of a power couple. Just like women of other ethnicities, black women are also attracted to physical appearance and a fitting personality. The only difference between black women and other ethnicities are that they are still less likely to date interracially.

Which Black Women Date Interracially?

Black women who are more open to the idea of dating interracially usually grew up in households that were more diverse, either the family has visible interracial relationships or their social lives are filled with people of various cultures. They are used to dating guys of different races or seeing their friends date interracially, so the stigma isn’t there. They are less likely to be labeled as a sellout for not dating a black man.

However, black women who don’t date interracially have complex reasons for doing so. Some are attached to the historical reasons. Some black women don’t date outside of their race because they’re skeptical that someone outside of their culture would have the same views on politics, religion, the economy, and even music. (Dare to tell a black woman that Elvis Presley is better than Michael Jackson, and watch the flames light up on her hair.)

Why Do Women Have Interracial Relationships?
Then there are black women who have a more simplistic reason for not dating interracially—the physical appearance of black men, the way he defies stereotypes of black men, or even the way he’s comfortable being seen as a stereotype and just doesn’t care what anybody else thinks. Yes, he may be a great dancer or a great basketball player or love certain foods. Or, he may be the head manager at a corporate company, play golf, be a vegetarian and hate hip hop. But there’s still that history in him that makes that black man unique. Black women (like all women) tend to feel an automatic connection with a black man because of similar backgrounds, history, social and religious issues, and usually cultural perspectives.

But every black woman is different. Whereas one black woman may find a guy of any race (be it black, white, Asian, Latino, Australian) to be a gift, another may find him to be a waste of time. It all depends on the person.
